Well, if your question is to buy or to lease, if I go back in time 10 or 15 years, most of the ATM sales were done by lease. That's because people were not sure of how the ATM was going to function in their business, machines cost a lot more money than they do now, and you just weren't sure about the return on investment. Today, there are still companies that lack the cash flow to make the purchase of an ATM, but in doing so now, instead of looking at a leasing company because of the cost of the machines being so low, they typically are looking at a placement company, a premium service provider, who places the ATM and provides all the maintenance and services that go around. Then there are many companies that certainly do want to buy an ATM, but make sure that you don't buy a used ATM. The cost for upgrades, for PCI compliance, AVA compliance are so great that the cost on a used ATM and bringing it up to compliance are just too great. "The ATM Business as an industry has matured, not all ATM service companies are the same" o Low-cost versus Premium Service Providers Low-cost Service Providers o With low barriers to entry, there are many new ATM processing companies that are looking for the quick sale. These companies often promise the moon, but are unable to deliver over the long-term 〈 Premium Service Providers o Generally, these companies have been in the industry for longer than 10 years and have built a sustainable foundation of services. Usually these companies are initially more expensive, however over the course of a multi-year contract the reliability and value-add services will be the smarter investment. o Illustration: "It is like buying tools...a cheap hammer is available anywhere, but a professional will purchase an industrial grade hammer that will give years of high quality service. An ATM is simply a "tool" that a business owner uses to generate revenue and profit. Now, obviously, the ATM business, if you're in the business of ATMs, of having an ATM, fees are critical. ATM fees are a mystery to many. As a new entrant into the business, what should I know about ATM fees? Neil: If you're a new entrance into the business or you're a seasoned veteran, some of the things that you should know about ATM fees, you look at ATM fees and most people when they talk about ATM fees are talking about the surcharge or a convenience fee. They're really divided into three camps on the way that those fees are utilized, either as a convenience where you're placing an ATM in your business so that your customers have the convenience of using it. It's much like a convenience store or a restaurant wants to have clean restrooms, not because they sell anything out of that restroom, but because it's a convenience to their customer and brings their customers back. On the other side, not just convenience, but you have companies that want to have it as a revenue generation. They want to take every square inch in their business and maximize what they can get for that. So, those companies, they might want to jack up their surcharge to as high as the market will bear. Then there's other businesses, and I think these are the more astute business people, that look the ATM and develop a strategy where they're looking at sales revenue and using the ATM as a sales generator to generate sales by lowering the surcharge to a lower amount, either lower than your competitors, or perhaps even not having surcharged at all on that ATM, that brings customers into your store, and you're dispensing cash to them and we all know that a percentage of that cash that's dispensed is spent there in the store.
